Wrap Your Hair Please!

Wrapping your hair at night is very important. Not only does it maintain whatever fabulous style you may have at the time, but it also protects your natural hair from drying and breakage. When asleep your head rubs against your pillows and sheets . This friction causes your strands to weaken and snap. Furthermore, if your pillowcases and sheet are made up of cotton materials, the cotton will absorb the oils from your hair, causing it to dry out. Even more frightening, the oils and products that were once in your hair have absorbed into on your pillowcases and end up on your face causing breakouts.

To avoid all this is a simple solution: wrap your hair! Not in any old scarf or du rag either. Most of those things are made from nylon, what you want is a silk scarf or bonnet. I prefer a bonnet because I can slip it on and don't have to worry about wrapping or tying anything. These can be bought from any beauty supply store for as low as $2.00. Simplicity at its best!

  1. Frozen spoons

Place two clean spoons in the freezer for about 15-20 minutes. Place up under your eyes, birectly on the part thats puffy. Hold for 1-2 minutes.

  2.  Green Tea bags

Seep two tea bages in hot water as if you were preparing tea, Remove the bags and place on your eyes. Leave them on for 10-15 minutes.

  3. Preperation H.

It sounds a little weird, but a thin layer of this hemrroid cream works wonders on baggy eyes.

How to protect your hair when Swimming

Swimming is a great exercise. Its fun and relaxing too. As these summer months approach many of us will be taking trips to the pool. And while we may be having a good time, our hair- not so much. Choline can be detrimental to the hair. I remember as a child, I went to summer camp one year where we swam every day, at the end of the summer my hair was 1/3 shorter, damaged, and life less. But don't worry, this doesnt wave to happen to you. There are things you can do to help protect your hair while enjoying a dip in the pool.

  • Keep your hair in a protective style such as braids or cornrolls.
  • Wet your hair with fresh water and then apply conditioner before you enter the pool. Because you hair is already wet, it will not be able to absorb as much of the chlorine. The conditioner will also act as a protective barrier.
  • Wear a swimming cap. These rubber caps are inexpensive and can be found in the sporting goods section. It will not keep all of the water out, but it will definately help.
  • Wash and condition your hair as soon as you exit the pool.
  • Use the recipe below to treat your hair if you swim on a regular basis.

All natural Choline Treatment:

You will need:

  1. One egg
  2. 1/3 cup Olive oil
  3. Peeled Cucumber
In a food procesor or blender, puree all of the ingredents. Apply to the hair and let sit for 10- 15 minutes. Rinse.

The truth about Foundation Primers

Using a foundation primers is an important step in applying makeup. They  moisturize, even out skin tone, absorb oil, provide a barrier between makeup and face, and help makeup stay in place and last longer. Some of the "best" foundation primers on the market today are made by  Bare Escentuals , Smashbox, Clinique, Laura Mercier, and MAC just to name a few. Not only are these primers good, but they are expensive. Most ranging upwards of $30 for a very small bottle.. This can be very problematic for Divas on a budget. However I have a solution that the beauty companies do not want you to know about, one that you may already have stashed in your medicine cabinet.

Yes- Milk of Magnesia

Tips for applying:

  • Make sure you use a good moisturizer before applying the M.O.M
  • Use a cotton ball, round, sponge, or make up brush to apply a thin layer of the M.O.M all over your face
  • Do NOT apply to the eyebrow or lid area.
  • Let the M.O.M dry fro a few minutes
  • If you see any white spots simply brush them away with your hand.
  • Once the M.O.M is fully dry, apply your foundation.

Other Uses:

Milk of Magnesia can be used as a face mask to control oily acne prone skin. After washing your face, Simply slather the M.O.M thickly all over your face. Let it fully dry and then rinse off. BOOM instant face mask!

L.A. Colors Polish Review

I am no nail tech, but I can do a mean pedicure and a decent polish. Today I will be reviewing L.A Colors Color craze nail polish and their Art Deco Nail Art. First off let me start by saying that if you have ever purchased L.A. Colors in the past they are SUPER cheap. Yes, you can find this brand at most big name dollar stores. However, Some of their products have Great quality that you wouldn't expect for the price.

One of these products are  Color craze nail polish. L.A. Colors have a wide assortment of colors, all of which are very bold and vibrant. The colors I used were Nuclear Energy (Purple), Energy Source (White), and Glistening Purple.

I also used the Art Deco Nail Art in Hot Pink and Fuchsia

In order to achieve the look I got, I used about three coats for the white and two for each purple. The polish glides on easily and is not watery at all. The Art Deco is pretty simple to use as it serves its purpose to create simple nail art designs with the thin brush provided. However, LA Colors needs to rethink the quality of said brush. When I wiped the brush to attempt to use it with another color, the whole thing fell apart! Other than that I had no problems.

I have read reviews from others stating that the polished chipped alot. I did not experience any chipping until about 2 weeks after application. That is excellent wear for a product which only costs a dollar! If you do decide to use this product and experience chipping, I would recommend you use a quality top coat over the polish.

Overall I would recommend buying the polish as the quality and colors are very good for the price. However I would say Skip the Art Deco and opt for buying a few nail art brushes that can be reused and wont fall apart.

How to deep condition

As I mentioned in some of my earlier posts, I deep condition my hair EVERY time I wash it. My hair benefits TREMENDOUSLY from deep conditioning.

Deep conditioning makes the hair soft and prevents breakage. It moisturizes and hydrates the hair. If you have damaged, dry, or brittle hair, regular deep conditioning can aid in restoring it.

There are a few ways that you can deep condition your hair, but the method I use most often is with a hooded dryer. I do this not only because it is fast and convenient, but because the heat from the dryer opens up the hair follicles and pores and allows the conditioner to penetrate.

What you will need:

A hooded dryer, and a good moisturizing or protein building conditioner.

Since I wash my hair in sections, I continue to work in sections as I deep condition also. This stops detangling. I apply conditioner all over each section of my hair and re-plait.

Next, I sit under the hooded dryer for about 15-20 minutes on low heat. Feel free to watch TV, read a magazine, work on crafts, ect during this time lol.

Lastly I rinse the hair off in sections and re-plait so that I can style. You can let your hair air dry, style while wet, or blow dry- its up to you!

How I wash my hair

In this post I am going to explain how I wash my hair step by step. It may seem a bit remedial, but trust me there is a method to my madness! I don't simply lean underneath a faucet, slap shampoo in, and rinse. There is a step by step procedure that I use to limit breakage, and ensure cleanliness.

What you will need:
A good, sulfate free, shampoo and conditioner, a comb with no more than 10 big teeth, and clips or hair ties.

Today I am using Loreal Evercare Sulfate Free Shampoo and conditioner. You should be able to purchase these from your local drugstore.

Before I start anything, I part my hair into four sections and secure with either clips or hair ties. When washing I work with one section at a time. Not only does this help to detangle and prevent breakage, if your hair is long or thick, it makes it easier to work with. Before I started doing this, my hair was so thick, I rarely could ever even feel the water on my scalp. Washing the hair in sections ensures that every section and your scalp gets equally cleansed.

I almost never wash my hair in the sink. There is a reason why, simply put it is gravity. Gravity allows the water to run from my roots to tip in a a downward fashion, instead of the opposite when you are washing in the sink. This downward motion also aids with detangling.

In the shower, working with one section at a time, I soak the hair until it is dripping wet. I then apply shampoo to the roots and scalp only. I work it in, massaging with my fingertips, NOT my nails. The shampoo will run down the hair and you can massage it into the rest of the hair if you choose.

The next thing I do is rinse the shampoo and apply conditioner to the entire section. I then use my comb to detangle, starting at the tips and working my way up. One the whole section is detangled, I plait(braid) it and begin working on the the next.

Repeat on each section of the hair. My end result is this:

Dandruff occurs from over production of oil in the scalp and or irritation from a specialized yeast called malessizia. The condition can either be hereditary or came from stress, weather conditions, product irritation or other skin conditions.

Fake cosmetics- Don't do it to yourself!

Selling and Buying counterfeit goods has been around before I was born. Movies, music, handbags, clothing, and more are all popular knockoffs. Some are better than others and people buy them both intentionally and unknowingly. Aside from taking money away from the manufacturers, partaking in an illegal activity, and embarrassing oneself by sporting a fake no one really gets hurt- right?  But what about cosmetics?

With the innovation of eBay, alibaba, Ioffer and others fake cosmetics are becoming more and more common. These sellers sell MAC, NYX, Nars and many other popular, but expensive name brand cosmetics for a fraction of the price of authentic. Even worse, they are advertising these fakes as "authentic". Do not be fooled! If you come across one of these sellers on eBay with an almost unlimited supply of name brand cosmetics, THEY ARE FAKE!!!!!

Not only are they knockoff, and a waste of money, but they may very well be dangerous too. Because these products are not authentic there is no telling what ingredients are used to make them. Don't do this to yourself. These are products that you would be applying to your skin, more specifically, your precious face! There are no regulations of the ingredients or care of the consumers health and safety. Many fake cosmetics, because they are very cheaply made, contain illegal harmful substances. Why would you want to apply something, when you have no idea of whats in it?

If you want to know that you are buying the real deal, buy directly from the brands retail store or website. This way you can assure that you are getting authentic products. There are people who are even buying wholesale fake cosmetics off of the aforementioned sites, and selling them at a discount locally! I recently befriended two of these people on facebook. Moreover, authentic High end cosmetics will never be sold at Beauty supplies, salons, flea markets, on the street, from random people ect.

I have never been one who believes in living beyond my means. Makeup is something nice to have, but it is not a necessity. There are many other nice, quality brands of makeup that are less expensive. If you can't afford the high end brands right now, choose an alternative until you can save up to afford them.
